Today is supposed to be about freedom, independence, and celebrating the beauty of America. But it’s hard to fully celebrate when I know families are being torn apart by ICE parents taken from their children, dreams shattered, lives disrupted.
Yes, some may not have had legal status but let’s not forget that America is a nation built by immigrants, by people seeking safety, opportunity, and a better life. That dream should never be reserved for just a few.
What hurts most is seeing how immigration enforcement often disproportionately targets minorities. There are undocumented people here from all over the world including Europe and Canada but the focus seems to always fall on Black, Asian & Brown communities. That’s not justice. That’s bias. And that’s not the America we claim to stand for.
So today, while others light fireworks, I light a flame in my heart for change, for equity, for humanity. I still believe in the promise of this country but I also believe we must do better.
